Waves and It’s Types
Relevant for UPSC Prelims & Mains Examination
WAVES: It refers to a disturbance or oscillation that transfers energy through a medium (like air, water, or solids) or even through a vacuum (in the case of electromagnetic waves). Waves are an important concept in various fields of science, including physics, engineering, and communications.
Mechanical Waves: Also called elastic mechanical waves are produced by disturbances in a material medium, requiring a medium to travel and cannot propagate through a vacuum, with oscillations in water as an example of such waves.
Non-mechanical or electromagnetic waves: Non-mechanical or electromagnetic waves are disturbances that can propagate without a material medium, traveling through vacuums and generated by oscillating electric and magnetic fields, encompassing a wide spectrum that includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.
